Admission Process for International Students in Finland
Choosing a Program and University
Universities: These institutions focus on academic research and offer both undergraduate and postgraduate degrees (bachelor’s, master’s, and PhDs).
Universities of Applied Sciences (UAS): Focus on practical training and professional skills, offering bachelor’s and master’s degrees.
Admission Requirements
Undergraduate Programs:
A high school diploma (equivalent to the Finnish matriculation examination).
Proof of English language proficiency if the program is taught in English. Accepted tests include IELTS, TOEFL, or PTE Academic. The minimum required scores usually range from IELTS 6.0-6.5 or TOEFL iBT 79-92.
Depending on the program, students may also need to take an entrance exam (especially for Universities of Applied Sciences).
Master’s Programs:
A recognized bachelor’s degree relevant to the field of study.
English language proficiency through IELTS (6.5 or higher), TOEFL, or other recognized tests.
In some cases, universities may require work experience, especially for UAS master’s programs.
Application Process
Studyinfo.fi: Finland has a centralized application system for most undergraduate and master’s programs through Studyinfo.fi. Students can search for programs, submit applications, and track the application process on this platform.
Application Deadlines:
The main application period is usually December to January for programs starting in the autumn (August/September).
Some programs, especially in Universities of Applied Sciences, may have a second application round from March to April.
Documents Required:
Transcripts and certificates.
Proof of language proficiency.
Motivation letter or personal statement.
Curriculum Vitae (CV) for some programs.
Letters of recommendation.
Entrance Exams: For certain programs (mainly at UAS), international students may be required to take entrance exams.
Admission Decision
After submitting the application, universities will review the documents and qualifications. Admission decisions are generally communicated by April-June for the autumn intake.
Residence Permit for Study
You must apply for a Residence Permit for Studies after receiving your admission letter. The Finnish Immigration Service (Migri) processes residence permit applications. You need to show proof of sufficient financial means (around EUR 7,200 per year) to cover living expenses.
